Indeed Application Failed to Submit — How to Fix It

A failed Indeed application is almost always caused by one of a handful of fixable issues. Here's how to diagnose and resolve each one.

Most common causes

Missing required fields. Indeed's application form often includes required fields that aren't visually obvious — things like a phone number, work authorisation question, or years of experience input. Scroll through the entire form and look for any field marked with an asterisk or shown in red after you tried to submit.

File size or format issue. Indeed accepts PDF and DOCX files up to 5MB. Files larger than this, or files in formats like .pages, .odt, or scanned image PDFs, will fail silently or with a vague error. Convert your resume to a clean PDF under 2MB.

Browser compatibility. Indeed's application flow works best in Chrome and Firefox. Safari and Edge occasionally have JavaScript issues that prevent form submission. Switch browsers before trying more complex fixes.

Network timeout. If your connection is unstable, the form data may not reach Indeed's servers before the session times out. This is more common on mobile networks or slow WiFi.

Indeed mobile app vs desktop. The mobile app occasionally has submission bugs that don't appear on the desktop site. If you're on the app, try the same application through a browser.

Step-by-step fix

1. Start by copying all your answers from the current form to a text document so you don't lose them.
2. Hard-refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) to clear any stale session data.
3. Scroll through the entire form and look for any unfilled required fields — especially at the bottom of the form where they're easy to miss.
4. Check your resume file: convert it to PDF, keep it under 2MB, and ensure it's not a scanned image.
5. If the above doesn't work, try a different browser.
6. If problems persist, try applying from a desktop computer rather than mobile.

How to check if your application actually went through

Go to your Indeed profile → "My Jobs" → "Applied." If the job appears there with an "Applied" status and the date, your application went through despite any errors you saw.

If the job doesn't appear in your applied list, your application did not submit successfully. Try again using the steps above. If Indeed continues to fail for a particular job, click "Apply on company site" if that option is available — many roles on Indeed also accept direct applications through the employer's own careers page.

Indeed error messages and what they mean

Indeed surfaces a few different error messages when something goes wrong. Here is what each one actually means:

"Your application could not be submitted. Please try again." This is a generic catch-all. It usually means either a required field was left blank, your resume file failed to upload, or a session error occurred. Start fresh: open the job in a new browser tab and fill in the form from scratch.

"This position is no longer accepting applications." The role has been closed, but Indeed has not removed it from search results yet. This happens often with high-traffic listings. The job is gone — move on.

"You've already applied for this position." Exactly what it says. Check "My Jobs → Applied" if you don't remember applying. If you applied and want to update your application, you cannot resubmit through Indeed once a role is marked as applied.

"File size exceeds the limit." Your resume is over 5MB. Convert to PDF and compress the file. Most resumes should be well under 1MB as a clean PDF.

"File type not supported." Indeed accepts .pdf and .docx only. Files in .pages, .odt, .rtf, or any image format will be rejected. Convert to one of the two accepted formats.

"There was an issue with your session. Please log in again." Your login session expired. Log out completely, clear your browser cookies for indeed.com, log back in, and start the application fresh.

No error, but the submit button does nothing. This is almost always a JavaScript conflict. Try a different browser, disable browser extensions (especially ad blockers and script blockers), and try again.

When to skip Indeed and apply directly to the company

Some roles on Indeed are better applied to directly, and in certain cases applying through Indeed may actually hurt you. Here is when going direct makes more sense:

The role is at a company you really want. Direct applications to the company's own careers page show up in their ATS differently than Indeed applications. At many companies, candidates who took the time to apply directly are reviewed with more care.

Indeed has failed multiple times. If you've gone through all the fixes and the application still won't submit, do not keep trying. Find the same role on the company's own website or LinkedIn and apply there directly.

The company is using a well-known ATS. If the job posting links to Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, or Workday, you can almost always find the same listing by going to company's careers page. Apply there directly to avoid the Indeed layer.

You want to tailor your application. Indeed's Easy Apply often limits what you can add. Applying directly through the company's ATS or careers page usually lets you include a cover letter, portfolio link, or custom answers that make a stronger impression.

To find the direct link, Google the company name plus "careers" or "jobs" and look for the same role on their own site.

Why does Indeed say my application was submitted but I got no confirmation email?

Indeed sends confirmation emails to the address on your account, not the email you entered in the application form. Check that your account email is current and check your spam folder.

Can I apply to the same Indeed job twice if my first attempt failed?

Only if the first attempt genuinely didn't go through (not showing in "Applied"). If it did go through, Indeed will block a second application to the same posting.

Why do some Indeed jobs redirect to a company website?

Some employers use Indeed only for posting, not for application collection. Clicking "Apply" redirects you to the company's own ATS. This is not a bug — it's how the employer set up their listing.

My Indeed application shows as submitted but the company says they never received it. What happened?

This is rare but does happen. The most likely cause is that the employer paused the role and stopped accepting applications through Indeed at the same time you submitted. Your application may have gone into a limbo state. Apply again directly through the company's website to be safe.

Does applying through Indeed hurt my chances compared to applying directly?

At most companies, no. But for highly competitive roles or roles where you want to stand out, direct applications through the company's own ATS occasionally get reviewed with more attention. If a role matters a lot to you, apply directly in addition to or instead of Indeed.

Why is the Indeed Easy Apply button missing on some job listings?

Not all employers enable Easy Apply. Some require you to apply through their own system. If there is no Easy Apply button, click "Apply now" and you will be redirected to the employer's careers page or ATS.
