Why financial analyst resumes get filtered out
Finance roles are competitive. Most companies use ATS to screen the first wave of applicants — and these systems look for specific terms: tool names, methodologies, and finance-specific vocabulary.
A resume that says "helped with financial planning" will lose to one that says "built a 3-statement financial model to support $50M capex decisions." The keywords aren't just for ATS — they signal seniority and fluency to human reviewers too.
Core financial analyst keywords by category
Financial Modeling & Valuation: financial modeling, 3-statement model (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow), DCF (discounted cash flow), LBO (leveraged buyout), comparable company analysis, precedent transaction analysis, sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis, valuation multiples (EV/EBITDA, P/E), NAV.
Planning & Reporting: FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis), budgeting and forecasting, variance analysis, monthly/quarterly close, P&L management, management reporting, KPI dashboards, rolling forecasts, zero-based budgeting.
Accounting & Compliance: GAAP/IFRS, revenue recognition, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, reconciliation, SOX compliance, internal controls, audit support, cost accounting.
Tools & Technology: Microsoft Excel (advanced: pivot tables, INDEX/MATCH, VBA macros), Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, Capital IQ, Tableau/Power BI, SQL, SAP/Oracle/Workday, Hyperion/Adaptive Insights.
Investment & Markets: equity research, fixed income, portfolio analysis, risk management, credit analysis, due diligence, investment thesis, pitch book, CFA, Series 7/Series 63.
Strong bullet point examples by seniority
Turn keyword lists into achievements: "Built a 3-statement DCF model to evaluate a $75M acquisition target, resulting in Board approval." Or: "Managed monthly variance analysis across 8 business units, identifying $2.1M in cost savings." Or: "Automated FP&A reporting in Excel using VBA macros, reducing the close cycle by 2 days."
Analyst (0–3 years): Focus on tools and execution — Excel, SQL, Bloomberg, budgeting, variance analysis, financial modeling, reconciliation.
Senior Analyst/Manager (3–7 years): Add strategic terms — FP&A, cross-functional collaboration, business partnering, forecast accuracy, stakeholder presentations.
Director/VP (7+ years): Emphasize outcomes and scope — P&L ownership, capital allocation, M&A, Board presentations, EBITDA improvement.
Tailoring keywords to the job description
FP&A roles look for different keywords than investment banking roles. Before applying, scan the job description for specific tool names, company systems, and finance functions mentioned. Mirror that language in your resume if you have the experience.
Avoid generic phrases that won't help with ATS or human reviewers. "Proficient in Microsoft Office" should become "Advanced Excel (DCF models, VBA)." "Strong analytical skills" should be replaced with a specific metric. "Team player" doesn't appear on any finance job requirement — skip it.
