What "Application Expired" means
"Application Expired" is an ATS status that appears when a job posting's active period ends — typically 30–90 days after the posting was created — and the system automatically closes all pending applications attached to that requisition.
It is NOT the same as a rejection. An "Application Expired" status means:
- The posting reached its ATS-configured expiration date
- The system closed all attached applications automatically
- Your application was NOT formally reviewed and rejected — it was administratively closed with the posting
In many cases, the role may still be actively hiring with a new requisition number. The expiration is a system event, not a recruiter decision.
Why it happens even when the role is still open
Many ATS systems (Workday, iCIMS, Taleo) have default posting expiration windows. When a posting expires, all applications attached to it expire too — even if the role is still being filled through a new posting.
Common scenarios:
- The recruiter created a new posting with a fresh 30/60-day window (and your original application is no longer in the active pool)
- The role closed and the posting expired simultaneously
- A high-volume role hit a cap or was rolled into a different requisition
The tell: Search the company's careers page for the same role title. If a new posting exists (especially with a newer date), the role is still active and you're no longer in the running from your original application.
Should you reapply?
Yes, in most cases — if the role is still listed and you're qualified.
When you reapply:
- Use the new posting/requisition, not the original one
- Refresh your resume and cover letter — the hiring team may be reviewing fresh applications
- Optionally, reach out to the recruiter: "Hi [Name] — I noticed my application from [date] expired when the posting rolled over. I've reapplied to the new posting and remain very interested in the [Role] at [Company]. Wanted to make sure I'm on your radar."
