What "Position Filled" means
"Position Filled" on a job posting means the employer has selected a candidate and the role is no longer accepting applications. The process for this position is effectively complete.
However, there is often a lag between the position being filled and the posting being removed or marked as filled. Reasons include:
- ATS or job board delays in updating posting status
- HR bandwidth — updating closed postings is a low priority
- The offer is extended but not yet formally accepted — the posting technically remains open until the start date in some systems
If you applied to a role that has since been marked "Position Filled," you were either screened out before the role closed or your application will not be reviewed.
If you already applied
If your application status changed simultaneously with "Position Filled": The role closed before your application was reviewed, or you were not selected. Either way, the process for this specific role is closed.
If your application is still showing as "In Progress" or "Under Review": Your application may be in consideration for a future opening, or the system hasn't updated to reflect the closed role. You can send a brief email to the recruiter: "I noticed the [Role] posting has been marked as filled — I wanted to check whether my application is still being considered for future openings of this kind."
Most likely reality: Your application will not receive a formal review. Move your energy to new applications.
Should you apply to a "Position Filled" role?
No — unless you have reason to believe the posting is outdated and the role is actually still open.
If you're unsure: Check the posting date and the date it was marked as filled. If the "filled" status appeared recently on a role posted 2+ months ago, the company may be re-posting soon.
The proactive play: If you're very interested in the company, send a direct message to the recruiter or hiring manager:
"I noticed the [Role] was recently filled — I'd still love to be on your radar if a similar position opens. [Brief value statement]. Happy to connect."
This is a low-pressure way to stay visible without wasting an application.
