What "Open to Work" actually does on LinkedIn

The LinkedIn Open to Work feature does two things:

1. Adds a green "#OpenToWork" frame to your profile photo — visible to everyone including your current employer, connections, and anyone who visits your profile
2. Enters your profile into LinkedIn's recruiter search filters — recruiters with LinkedIn Recruiter can filter for candidates who are open to work

You can choose between two visibility settings:
- All LinkedIn Members — public green banner visible to everyone
- Recruiters Only — hidden from your profile photo but tags your profile in LinkedIn Recruiter's filters (note: LinkedIn cannot guarantee your current employer won't see this if they use LinkedIn Recruiter)

Does the Open to Work banner help you get found?

Yes — to a degree. LinkedIn's own data suggests Open to Work profiles receive significantly more recruiter messages than profiles without it. The "Recruiters Only" setting is included in LinkedIn Recruiter's candidate filters, which means active recruiters searching for candidates will find you more easily.

However, the green banner alone is not a strategy. It signals availability but doesn't replace:
- A well-optimized profile with relevant keywords
- An active presence (posting, commenting, connecting)
- Direct outreach to recruiters

Think of Open to Work as increasing your passive discoverability — useful, but not sufficient on its own.

When NOT to use the public Open to Work banner

If you are currently employed: The green banner is visible to your current employer and colleagues. If you're in a role where discretion matters (and it usually does), use "Recruiters Only" instead of the public banner.

If you are in a senior or executive role: At Director level and above, some hiring managers and recruiters perceive the public green banner as a signal of desperation or instability — an unfair bias, but a real one in some industries. The "Recruiters Only" setting achieves the discoverability benefit without the visibility downside.

If your current employer uses LinkedIn Recruiter: LinkedIn explicitly warns that they cannot guarantee your employer won't see the "Recruiters Only" signal if they have a Recruiter license. Assume some risk if confidentiality is critical.

How to set up Open to Work correctly

1. Go to your LinkedIn profile
2. Click the Open to button below your name
3. Select Finding a new job
4. Fill in:
- Job titles you're interested in (be specific — add 3–5)
- Job locations (include "Remote" if you're open to it)
- Job types (full-time, contract, etc.)
- Start date (immediately, or 1–3 months)
5. Choose visibility: All LinkedIn Members or Recruiters Only
6. Save

Optimization tip: The job titles you enter are searchable — add the specific titles you want to be found for, not just vague descriptions. "Software Engineer" searches differently from "Senior Frontend Engineer."

Can my current employer see I'm "Open to Work"?
